Determination and Persistence

Determination and Persistence

This is a real life story of engineer John Roebling building the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, USA back in 1870. The bridge was completed in 1883, after 13 years.
In 1883, a creative engineer named John Roebling was inspired by an idea to build a spectacular bridge connecting New York with the Long Island. However bridge building experts throughout the world thought that this was an impossible feat and told Roebling to forget the idea. It just could not be done. It was not practical. It had never been done before.

Roebling could not ignore the vision he had in his mind of this bridge. He thought about it all the time and he knew deep in his heart that it could be done. He just had to share the dream with someone else. After much discussion and persuasion he managed to convince his son Washington, an up and coming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts of how it could be accomplished and how the obstacles could be overcome. With great excitement and inspiration, and the headiness of a wild challenge before them, they hired their crew and began to build their dream bridge.
The project started well, but when it was only a few months underway a tragic accident on the site took the life of John Roebling. Washington was also injured and left with a certain amount of brain damage, which resulted in him not being able to talk or walk.

“We told them so.” “Crazy men and their crazy dreams.” “It’s foolish to chase wild visions.”
Everyone had a negative comment to make and felt that the project should be scrapped since the Roeblings were the only ones who knew how the bridge could be built.
In spite of his handicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desire to complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever. He tried to inspire and pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they were too daunted by the task.

As he lay on his bed in his hospital room, with the sunlight streaming through the windows, a gentle breeze blew the flimsy white curtains apart and he was able to see the sky and the tops of the trees outside for just a moment.

It seemed that there was a message for him not to give up. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do was move one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this, he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife.

He touched his wife’s arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to call the engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her arm to tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was under way again.

For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with his finger on his wife’s arm, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular Brooklyn Bridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man’s indomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances. It is also a tribute to the engineers and their team work, and to their faith in a man who was considered mad by half the world. It stands too as a tangible monument to the love and devotion of his wife who for 13 long years patiently decoded the messages of her husband and told the engineers what to do.
Perhaps this is one of the best examples of a never-say-die attitude that overcomes a terrible physical handicap and achieves an impossible goal.

Often when we face obstacles in our day-to-day life, our hurdles seem very small in comparison to what many others have to face. The Brooklyn Bridge shows us that dreams that seem impossible can be realized with determination and persistence, no matter what the odds are.

  1. IS a Fascinating story because despite the social problems these two will not be given up and although life will play a bad card and one died the other followed the dream, even when serious this was persevering and using his finger was saying as continue to build the bridge .... this story showed me that everything in life is possible despite the circumstances, we just put all our strength into it and be persistent. 5. You should never give up your dreams, for more impossible that is, never give up; this it first started with an idea, but in the end with dedication, enthusiasm and faith, was achieved; this story told me, it's better fight for something u want, to stand there waiting for life pass, these two, father and son, they did something spectacular, bc who ends the dream of the other person? knowing that there will be trouble ahead?
Anyway, this is an example, you never ever have to give up your dreams for nothing, never give up, for "little problems", u can always, u just have to be willin!

  10. Well this story is interesting because creating a fabulous Brooklyn Bridge in New York is a little difficult, but I understood that no matter how big the problem or dream that you want to perform, but only you have to sacrifice and devote to that, either we can not take from some people who say you can not, because everything in life can be but with love. you never have to give up, no matter the circunstances are against you
you have to work hard to realize your dreams ,if you are in front of some obstacles
like when people dont believe in your project, you have to convince them that you are right and go ahead until you get your goal

This story, showed me that we can't surrender all our hope,it doesn't matter if you have a difficulties,if you don't have a part of your body or if you have the biggest problems in earth or the biggest obstacles in our lifes, all is in want and if we put our effort and dedication,we can do it and we can try all the times that we can,if we wish to do something from the heart and we put all our willpower to accomplish our dreams and also if we pray to our Lord and we put all our wish and projects and have a good progress in our work day by day until you accomplish your goal and them continue working because you got your goal and dreams with succesful.(MARIEL PATRICIA CASTILLO POTENTINI)

  15. this story is amazing and wonderful because I learned that when you want you can, in spite of everything that happened and told that the bridge could not do, that the idea of the bridge was very mad, he never gave up, that taught me that the characteristics, consequences and obstacles will not be able to stop your dreams. In life nothing is impossible.(Alejandro Santos Peguero)

  16. It's an inspiring story because it shows that even if we feel grounded or nobody believes in our dreams, we should never give up on them. It's an example of love too, and that shows too that there is always someone who believes in us, someone that is encouraging us and telling us that we can achieve our goal. (Monica Guerrero)

  17. Well, I find it devastating. Life's no an easy task, and those who stand against life's weigh are merciless crushed. But only a few are able to stand again and fight back. It takes bravery, tons of strenght and it takes some madness. Just to see your dreams fulfilled. Not everyone is capable of that feat. Already mentioned in the film Amelie: these are hard times for dreamers. (Emmanuel Chaves Montero)

  18. Definitely dreams come true. No matter how impossible, stupid or weird they can look like; no matter how much times you've failed; the only thing that really makes you different is your way to see the obstacles on the road... We can do what John and Washington Roebling did: to reach our goals, or die trying. That's how we'll win on life... or I think so... (Yanabel Fernández)

  21. This history just shows me one things, that if you just need a dream, and a little of determination for make that dream a reality. This puts me clear in the way of think of those great people who do something enough powerful with their life for make everyone lives be different, and that know that because that experience our life chance, at the same way the life chance for that people who today use the Brooklyn Bridge.
